Global Climate Change Empty Global Climate Change

Post by Nihil Sat Dec 19, 2009 4:44 pm

Its real...

proof?

global mean temperatures are rising, sea levels are rising, the north pole should dissappear within the decade or so, and many plants and animals, such as wood eating beetles where i live, are beginning to migrate to different places.

not urgent?

if we don't fix it...then the world will hit a point where many species will be UNABLE to adapt, and die off, the sea levels will rise drastically causing many different problems in the ecosystems, plants will die, WILDFIRES in california will be crazy and everywhere, more so than is natural, because there should be some, because of all that dry brush in California.

a quote:

To be perfectly honest and fair, we're not entirely sure what will happen. The problem is that the environment is incredibly complex, and the inter-relationships between climate and its living organisms is massively difficult to model. What scientists are mostly worried about is when we reach the "tipping point." This mysterious point in time is where we activate positive feedback loops in the environment, which will cause nature to, instead of working to counteract and balance our effects, accelerate global warming. At this point, carbon emissions into the atmosphere from natural processes will increase without human help. And then there are the issues regarding rising sea levels, more erratic weather patterns, stronger tropical storms, etc, all of which will devastate lives, homes, economies, and development throughout the globe.

that basically sums it up.

do we try to be healthy and avert a potential disaster, like that video before, buying insurance for the unpredictable? or do we blatantly ignore the facts that TRAINED SCIENTISTS are sending us and go on with our happy lives without regard for the future?

i'm no scientist, yet anyways XD, but i put credit in what they say, seeing as my father is an organic chemist.

It is not overhyped to say that global warming can bring about the end of mankind, natural disasters occur more often now because of global warming, the ecology of the world is very malleable, just these few degrees Celsius can, and are, causing problems.

Being ignorant of the facts won't help us.

another quote to help clear anything up, or at least i hope:

Global warming is affecting many parts of the world. Global warming makes the sea rise, and when the sea rises, the water covers many low land islands. This is a big problem for many of the plants, animals, and people on islands. The water covers the plants and causes some of them to die. When they die, the animals lose a source of food, along with their habitat. Although animals have a better ability to adapt to what happens than plants do, they may die also. When the plants and animals die, people lose two sources of food, plant food and animal food. They may also lose their homes. As a result, they would also have to leave the area or die. This would be called a break in the food chain, or a chain reaction, one thing happening that leads to another and so on.

The oceans are affected by global warming in other ways, as well. Many things that are happening to the ocean are linked to global warming. One thing that is happening is warm water, caused from global warming, is harming and killing algae in the ocean.

Algae is a producer that you can see floating on the top of the water. (A producer is something that makes food for other animals through photosynthesis, like grass.) This floating green algae is food to many consumers in the ocean. (A consumer is something that eats the producers.) One kind of a consumer is small fish. There are many others like crabs, some whales, and many other animals. Fewer algae is a problem because there is less food for us and many animals in the sea.

Global warming is doing many things to people as well as animals and plants. It is killing algae, but it is also destroying many huge forests. The pollution that causes global warming is linked to acid rain. Acid rain gradually destroys almost everything it touches. Global warming is also causing many more fires that wipe out whole forests. This happens because global warming can make the earth very hot. In forests, some plants and trees leaves can be so dry that they catch on fire.

Post by Sqrl Sat Dec 19, 2009 5:39 pm

tbh i really dont care what happens because i have heard so many theories of Global Warming that i dont know what to believe.

Another thing is statistics dont mean much. They can be altered fairly easily.
Also the fact that humans can adapt to any change big or small.
Now granted that there will be casualties but humans and life go on no matter what happens to Earth. Now im not saying that its not real its just we need to conserve more and go more green ofc. Either way things change if the climate changes its not the end of the world. Somewhere there will be survivors that will start new governments and etc, etc.

I know I am going to offend some people, but I really do not see how you cannot believe in global climate change from massive tonnage of pollution entering the atmosphere. To think you can release a large amount of gas into a limited area and that gas will not affect the existing composition is inane at best, and utterly agenda based at worst.

Omg. Sad
People should do something bout it. I mean if water rises where we live we will die. And if it will get that hot, people where water did not kill them will die from thirsty cause rivers will dry. I don't know how will we live with it. I don't know, maybe it sounds stupid, I don't know is that water comes is salty. Maybe we can use it and transport bit till it is still ice and keep it for latter when problem comes. We can get water for drink and make level of water lower then it should be. Or someone should tell better plan cause I made this up while I was in panic. And I still am.

ya, just like the ice age, it is normal, but we have sped it up a lot from the greenhouse gasses, i mean, i bet if we bought more time, we may one day find out how to avert such a natural process and preserve the life that we have here.

Sometimes i think of this not just as a scientific debate, but as a moral and ethical debate, because, will we really risk the future of earth, of our species, of every other animal?

It always fun to watch people complain about this when they believe in Evolution. Considering evolution states survival of the fittest, which in turn implies: "If you can do it, then you have every right to."

That is Natural Evolution. Biological Evolution. The Evolution that happens in nature. this is not evolution. Humans are not evolving Aard. i dont believe in a totalitarian application of the law of the fittest. Otherwise, kill your homos, kill everyone in africa, enslave them. you are being totalitarian with a teory that is nothing more then a Nature process. Mankind is already the strongest and fittest of all living beings.

ACTUALLY, it isnt. but thats another story. The law you just called on is the law of survival(or law of the Sith), and while the scientific Theory of evolution, encompasses some of this, the 'turning into the strongest and fittest is not a willful change. Ín fact, it does not happen in a rate that generations notice it.

Mankind is just overpowered. It is one of those events that in the evolution of a planet, it makes that planet fail to prosper.

Im sorry if you think i believe in the law of the fittest, but i dont. At least not to the point where it encompasses evth in life. I am already strong and fit for this world. i was born a human. and because i have the gift of rationality, i can now acknowledge the importance of every single part of the ecossystem. This is biology and ecossystem 101. As weak as a part of it is, it is connected to something else. Every thing you do, affects the rest, even if at least in a small way.

Global Warming is not a new Ice Age, its THE Ice Age. The Gobbler, The Shitstopper. Levels are so high, im afraid the fucking planet will rip apart in 200 years. Fortunately, we will all be dead i hope. Some humans say they are selfless and humble, that they care for others. But we are not...we are still selfish. Maybe its in our nature. Maybe its been there in every single living being. The instinct to survive and prosper...

Global Climate Change Empty Re: Global Climate Change

Global Warming. Tell that to my frozen ass sitting in 2 feet of snow....

As for the evolution thing. If you believe we've evolved to this point, why wouldn't we evolve past this point? Prime setting according to evolution. Introduction to pollution on a gradually increasing scale for 400 years, along with the climate conditions that ensued because of it. And yet everyone seems to believe it will be the end of the world, that we can't possibly survive and adapt.

So which is it I wonder. Do people believe in Evolution? In which case we'll adapt and have nothing to worry about. Or do they doubt it? In which case we really do need to worry about the consequences. As I see with most, I see people selectively pick and choose what they want to believe about a theory. To me believe in the theory, or don't. If you believe certain things then don't claim you believe in the theory, say you believe certain parts but aren't willing to dedicate to a belief. Just a personal off-topic irritation I have with debates anymore, when people state one thing and then say "Oh that's not what I mean, I don't believe THAT part."

I think people over-react about Global Warming and act like they know what will happen. If we could accurately predict meteorological events then there wouldn't be any environmental catastrophes, no casualties we could put down as "Acts of God." Our atmosphere is pretty resilient, along with our entire planet, pretty much no matter what you believe. You believe in evolution then you believe this planet has gone through a meteor strike, ice ages, earthquakes on a global scale, and life survived through it all. If you believe in Chrsitianity you believe this planet has survived a global flood and maintained life with a gene pool that shouldn't have been large enough to repopulate the planet.

Bottom line is this. Always assume you know very little about events, because history is flooded with examples of us thiking we knew everything and being bitch slapped because of it.

Post by Dray The Fingerless Sun Dec 20, 2009 2:38 am

I suggest you read something about the ACTUAL updated scientific theory of evolution. what you just saw is theory of evolution applied to non-biological elements. you cant do that aard. thats like applying the theory of evolution to celestial bodies. it doesnt apply. the theory of evolution is sth biological, period. it involved mutations and natural environment. you no longer LIVE in a complete natural environment. and even so, evolution of man is unpredictable now.

and above all...a rational being is capable of shifting its evolutionary steps. humans would not be so numerous, too numerous infact, and so manipulative of the environment if we were not rational. we have set ourselves apart from Nature, and can control some of it, to an extent, creating artificial situations, situations that are not encompassed by the theory of Evolution.

you say you dont like people saying they only believe in part of sth. i wish you would do me a favor and not invoke theories and such without knowing to wich extent they are appliable to.

------------------------------------
on another note, and a personal one too, i wish humans would be wiped out almost all from this earth(yes, including me and my loved ones if necessary) because of our decisions.(ok maybe i exagerated, but i feel kinda grudged at my species sometimes) the excuse for this is that, our generations are fixing something that we were forced in by our antecestors. true. but if i am thrown into a rancor pit by someone else, do i not try to get myself out of it? this is an excuse to not act and change. fear is what drives humanity to not advance.
dont get me wrong, i dont support sustainability of the environment just becuz i love critters and trees. while beauty and acknowledgement of happiness are the only reasons to live, every single fuel, every single thing you have in ur house or in ur car, came from nature. thats quite remarkable.

narrowing it down a bit, if u have sth, that regenerates itself, thru a global cycle, one where even you are included, and you choose to use this to support urself and advance yourself, you will find that in the long term, using the fastest regeneration method gives you more freedom and less cost. fossil fuels, not only fuck up the cycle that regenerates energy in this world, they also burn really fast, and while they were good for when we started our technological expansion, it makes no sense to still use them. human greed and stupidity have not allowed economies to be more spacey, allowing for newer, better, stronger sources to come in.

finally, global warming is something that comes normally, but it is coming too fast. if a car hits you at 20mph, itll do less damage then if it hits you at 100mph. thats also a more or less realistic scale to the speeds of wich this is happening btw. and im basing myself in the past aard. you yourself said to look to the examples of the past. i look at the past, and see co2 levels that not even the meteor that killed the dinossaurs could of caused. does it make me panic? no. does it sadden me a bit? yes.

in the end, we have been given some quite easy to make choices to help environment. its a gradual process, to convert, but if one is willing, one can succeed.

Post by Aardvark Sun Dec 20, 2009 4:30 am

I don't subscribe to either Evolution or Christianity, and I admit that I don't keep a close eye on it because it's the epitome of pompousness to state what has happened and to try and interpret with unproven methods. Theory of Evolution is a nice way scientists say so they can refute my argument, but it's taught as if it's fact, and that's wrong. Scientific theory has become almost laughable anymore. We don't spend enough time understanding or questioning our own results and as a result we're wrong on a shit load of things.

Every time I try to get up to date they change something. That shows me how much we don't know, so it's pointless to keep up with it. We won't know, we probably will never have a sure fire answer, and even if we guess right we won't ever be able to prove it. So why bother? If you can do something that does less harm then do it that way, and whatever happens will happen. But don't say to me, "We need to stop it now," when you don't know what will really happen if allowed to continue. You don't KNOW, it's not the movies, and we're not always right. On the contrary as humans in scientific theory we're more often WRONG.

many theories are wrong in a way. but then again, downgrading science like that is quite hipocritical aard. after all...look at your luxuries, and the things you have in your house. they are all result of the scientific method. the scientific method does NOT assume an absolute truth, they assume a temporary truth, as in, this is the best theory we have so far. it points many things right on the spot. probably itll be dropped by a improved version of it, but for now, you can use this one. its not harmful. Science states facts for stylistic purpose. In true science speak, a theory is always a theory. Sure it can make some results, BUT, as imperfect beings that the scientific method recognizes us as, we can never achieve the ABSOLUTE final truth. it does not mean we should not try to get close to it.

Global Climate Change Empty Re: Global Climate Change

Post by Nihil Sun Dec 20, 2009 4:43 pm

We are bringing about a quicker end to humanity with global warming, we need to buy time

on another note, aard, global warming is the "accepted name" for what is actually happening, global climate change.

also aard, evolution takes place of millennia, like, so slow its ridiculous because of the slow spread of a trait around a community. So we WOULDN'T be able to change quickly enough before we die.

also, if you don't buy evolution, i hold this as a belief since last year when we learned about it in depth, then you don't buy science.

A theory cannot be proved, but can be observed to be true, hence Einstein's theory of Relativity.

When Rna is transcribed into mRna, we have observed that there are literal mistakes for every something like 10000 transcriptions, we even have a backup system that goes through and checks it. In this way evolution happens, slowly, because if these mistakes create favorable traits, usually in the way of proteins and other tissues and such, then it will be passed around the community due to natural selection.

again pointing to that video, aard do you have insurance, life insurance, health insurance? something like that? you don't KNOW if you will ever need it, you sure as hell hope you don't, but that doesn't mean you don't buy it, for your own protection.

consider active steps to slow down climate change like insurance, we don't konw necessarily, but we are taking steps that will help the earth and preserve life, so why not?

Exactly. but the debate is if we are doing ANYTHING at all. Which is ludicrous to say we are not affecting the air in any way. Its simple chemistry. There is only so much air molecules, and we are diluting it with other shit molecules. How hard is that to believe? FFS. Do you have even the SLIGHTEST clue as to the massive tonnage of waste that is send into the atmosphere daily via industry and transportation?

No I don't believe in Evolution. I've seen too many holes punched in the theory to believe in it. You see I'm not pompous enough to believe we actually have the correct answer to our origins as a species.

And I love your irrational conclusions Nihil. I don't buy evolution so I don't believe in science. You do know we've made the same relative scientific progress since both before and after the theory came about?

Not necessarily blaming the science itself, or even scientists. Their job is to study and report findings. Mostly the media and the sponsors of the scientists are to blame. They throw every theory out there as if it's fact and the media does such a good job of making anyone who disagrees look like an ignorant caveman. The science may be relatively unchanged, but how culture manipulates it has to shit.
