Re: BP Oil spill rant
Whatever life could be killed in an explosion is NOTHING compared to the damage the leak is causing on the environment. Does no one remember the exxon valdez?

Remember there's also the chance of a worsening, the explosion fails and widens the hole.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
oh thats not a problem aard. the drilling hole is actually a long long long shaft down to the reservoir of oil. the hole we are alking about is basically a chimney for the reservoir. if we widen it it will simply widen the tip of the chimney, causing no change in the amount of oil spilled.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
The problem is that it isn't regulated, in european companies, they HAVE to have this special seal thingy. The other thing is that it was a stupid idea in the first place, I had thought it was a good idea at first, but now I KNOW I am wrong. This is ridiculous, they also lied about being prepared for this spill, they obviously weren't. Its too dangerous, we will never be able to vacation to that area in our life times again if the oil washes up, WHICH IT WILL.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
Oh and Aard, reports have shown that there is hardly any big oil out there, so, it isn't necessary. Also, soda and water mix, oil doesn't mix in water, duh.
secondly, they are trying to cap the leak not take all the oil out, the latter is of secondary importance right now.

shit happens, this just means we will have more strict codes when it comes to offshore drilling.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
there are plenty of places to vacation, the gulf wont be the same, but vacations arent ruined because one tourist hotspot is polluted with oil. the oil should be cleaned up AFTER the leak has been fixed/stalled. it wouldnt make sense to clean it all up, fix the leak, then clean yet again. theoretically since oil is a naturally occurring in nature it should clean itself in due time

I love the "eh fuck it" type attitude lol. They should clean it up while its leaking, that minimizes the damage to the surrounding ecosystems and could possibly stop the oil from reaching things like the loiusiana wetlands and florida everglades.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
meh what fail...how were they drilling it in the first place? With tubes n shit? Why not just try and rebuild that sort of...like tube the oil to a storage area...
champ, this just shows humans how insignificant they are. We think we can do everything and are so cool and powerful with our advanced science and technology, but God shows us by putting a hole the size of a dish plate. And noone can do anything abt it. Not to get into a religious argument here or anything, but that;s how I see it.

Not even worth my time.
the only person here that SEEMS to have done ANY research is Aard and you guys are berating him for defending BP or suggesting things that are to outlandish to even be considered.
Knee jerk reactions do nothing to fix a problem, they usually only make them worse. There is enough blame in this to go around from BP to the federal government.
I will not offer ways to plug the hole because i have no idea how, though i have heard of some success of using low yield nuclear devices to plug similar holes in Russia. not sure how successful it actually was tho.

Re: BP Oil spill rant
hmmm noone ever said that..take a look at all the religious rules and shit. He wants ppl to obey him cuz he created them, pretty logical humanwise. And if you don't listen to him and respect him for all he's done for you, he chucks you in hell.
Anyways...that was all OT. Well I'm not saying anything against aard cuz he pretty much knows the issue. Though champ is correct about them being pathetic when it comes to cleaning up that stuff. While ofc its impossible to keep cleaning as it keeps gushing, they would do well to try and contain it from reaching beaches and gulf and keep it in that area. That imo, is not an impossible feat. You know the machinery they use to get shitloads of oil from the earth to keep us going? They could use that on the oil since it does NOT mix with water..suction it to storage.
And a tube does not sound illogical to me because that would not be going against the flow, rather using the flow to our advantage.

God is supposed to be perfect, and the human mind, brace yourselves, :O, is....imperfect! not just that its....OMG, FLAWED! hence why you dont think like God and viceversa.
Ptolemy, thats pretty harsh, thinking no one did sum research on the matter. I suggested you many theoretical possibilities to cover the hole. BP knew the risks, managed the events wrong and got a bigger pile of shit then the pile of shit they had in their hands already.
I sure dont wanna blame them for destroying the Gulf of Mexico or anything, god no, thats NOBODYS fault....

Harsh.... yes it is. how true is it though? Theoretical possibilities are one thing but how can you offer theoretical possibilities if you are not at least familiar with the forces at work? Someone said there was no 'pump' forcing the oil out and that may be true in the mechanical sense but there is pressure that forces the oil out of that hole. if it was easy as putting a cork on it do you think they would have done that by now? You all seem to think that they would rather loose money in the escaping oil AND all the money they will pay out in lost wages and clean up. when this is over BP may not exist and before you start celebrating think of the global impact that will have on the job market.
That will FURTHER depress the economies of not only that region but also our economy as a major oil producer but the rise in crude and, consequently, the price of Gasoline, Diesel and heating oil. That goes up and EVERY THING goes up. then i have to listen to all of you remind me of how right i was and we could not have THAT happen...

My suggestions werent putting a cork in it. I suggested implosive demolitions and landslide, as ways to go around the oil pressure of it coming out, wich duh, i know. If there was no pressure it wouldnt be pumping out now would it? Its not that BP isnt trying to undo stuff, its that it is panicking and miss managing the situation. Containing the oil leakage, unlike stopping it, is easier and should have been done right away to avoid spreading. They delayed too long and now it is spreaded out. Still, containment of further leaking is still good idea. The first ideas they tried involved rerouting the oil, as a first attempt to cover their shit and still get the precious oil out. Not working, since they were using the same technology that opened that oil hole in the first place. Now they try to cover it up completely. You will not listen to everyone reminding you anything because no one has disagreed with you or even said otherwise. But people have the right to cast blame on BP, because any oil company knows the risks of offshore drilling, and when the shit hits the fan, people have the right to say 'I told you so'. However, some people tend to say 'i told you so' one too many times.

Containment is a good idea and, i believe that is being mismanaged as we speak how ever, i am not sure that BP is equipped to do so. The first steps would be to try and siphon the oil off if they knew that in the short term shutting it off was not viable what were they to do but to try and redirect the oil so it can be processed. You also have to remember that for every step BP has made they have had to convince a bureaucrat in Washington that this was the next best thing to try. Our President said that him self in a press conference when he said the the Government had been involved in the attempted cappings and other attempts to stem the flow of oil.
The risks of off shore drilling have been forced upon them by the US Government. Even deep water drilling has been mandated. we cannot drill any new wells on land and in water less than 1000' are off limits to. the fees and other requirements that are placed on those ventures make drilling on shore and in shallow water cost more than it is worth. do you realize how easy it would have been to cap this well at ground level or even in water up to 1000'?
Not to mention there were several countries that have experience with this type of thing that offered the US thier help and were denied entry into our waters. there was mis-communication between BP and the US government and there still is. steps that could have been taken were not, steps that needed to be taken were slow.
The being reminded i was right comment was a barb for Nihil more than anyone else.

Reading threw this, i now really want to try that. anyway back on topic.
From an engineering standpoint, its another one of the things that we doomed ourselves with, such as when greenland melts were all gonna be screwed, ect. But there are things we could do, but instead of taking one that has bad sides to it also at the start, and just dealing with the economical damage, instead we decided to let it continue flowing into the gulf, and having it do more damage, so when we finally do something, it will cause greater, delay on this has done more than what would have originally fixed it.
