I had that exact same screen soran in XP for KotOR I. I got other games to work and never came back to it because I upgraded my comp and started playing games with better graphics. I think it is that torrent you dl'ed. You could try dl'ing another copy of KotOR from another torrent or searching the posts on PB to see if anyone else had that problem for the version of KotOR you already dl'ed. I patched mine to latest version as well. If I mess around with KotOR again and get it to work, I'll PM you and tell you what I did.

soran, I figured out how to get rid of that weird screen when you start. You need to use a crack from gamecopyworld. That is what worked for me. I can play the game in Windows 7 just fine now and I don't get that screen anymore.
