Yeah, but the thing is, you have subscription you'll probably net around 20-30% of all gamers. You get rid of that subscription and you'll net around 90-98% of all gamers.

would love for EA not to be greedy but....its EA. I mean the only thing more greedy than EA out there is Activision-...thank god THEY didnt make this game.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
It's not greed, it's bad business. Players have to pay $50 for the game and $15 each month to play it, that's $230 a year per player and you get about a fifth of the market, then about 1 expansion a year for another $30 makes the additional years $210. Now get rid of subscriptions and take the number of players times five, each player is only paying $50 a year for the first year and $30 each year after for expansions, but because it's five times the people it works out to $250 the first year and $150 for each next year, it's more in the start up and less over time, but you establish a better repore with your buyers who will in turn favor your company. People favor your company, more developers will work with you. More developers means better games and more business. At minimum they could reduce the cost to $5 per month which won't net you as many players, probably only triple rather than quintuple your sales but it still works out to $330 for the first year and $270 for each year after that. Less developer opportunity, but at least it's a quantifiable number.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
and justifies the servers maintenance a bit more. wow is about that ,15 dollars a month, wich is stupid considering a net pool of 12 million people doesnt need that much. server maintenance per number of players increasing ratio is a logarithmic rise. Its not proportional, so themore players there are, the fewer the subscriptions fee should be. However if SWTOR makes a in game shop system, tehy will get rich, hell ill even buy somethings in it if i see sth sweet and nice.
Another thing Aard, there are a bit of problems with you calling it bad business. Its not bad business, because server maintenance on MMO levels IS A EXPENSIVE ENDEAVOUR. If it was bad business, Blizzard wouldnt be buying their 14th YACHT this year from all the fucking fortune. Plus yo need to keep a team of devs and hardware techs to maintain servers, fix games, install new content as the game progresses, and support customers. Also, saying that you will quintuple sales if you made the game free is a really far fetched number. Sure you maybe right, more right in this case cause its Star Wars, but that is a very extreme number, and has no groundings of estimation. I agree it would increase, probably double the number of players, but beyond that its pure speculation.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
It's Star Wars, a FREE MMO of Star Wars, even people who have only seen the movies once will get it because it's Star Wars. And true not "bad" business, just "inefficient" given what they could rake in by thinking a bit more.

If they put out prepaid cards, like runescape/maplestory/etc, that would bring in even more money

Yeah In-game shops are pretty effective revenue builders.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
They don't want it to be too demanding, since they want as much people to play as they can.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
Mass Effect 1 had better graphics. And we KNOW this is going to be pay-to-play so they obviously aren't concerned about making their consumers pay through the nose.

Eh, the game's not done yet, so...
Also, I don't know what you guys are talking about, it looks fine to me.
Did you watch it in HD ?

Yes, it looks like shit, compared to any game I have made in 2010. High Def doesn't improve the graphics it just makes the flaws more glaring.

i'd try out swotor because of kotor since i have always been a fan of Kotors crafting and skilling system (theres heck to do and customize gawd, the lightsaber hilts looks sexy!) but other than that, i might put my money out on something like rift or Aion
