Separation of church and state is NOT in the Constitution. There is a clause that says that government will not favor or make laws establishing a religion.

no what this means is if they make a concession for one religion (ie foot baths and prayer rooms for our Muslim brethren) then they should make similar concessions for all other majority religions. It says not to favor or establish. Not separate.

You are circling around the subject. This only means that to please equally all religions, the government must be associated with none of them in particular. The other venue would be to be associated with ALL of them, wich is impossible due to contradictions amongst religions. Thus, the only other equality standard is to have none of them particularly associated, but allow them all equal rights.

circling? no this is a literal interpretation of the constitution. Does not say separate it says not to favor. Opinion is one thing reality is another. Right now Muslim students are catered to and Christian students are punished for carrying a Bible. Muslim students can get time to pray but christian students have to make due with 'a moment of silence'. This does not happen every where in the US and in places where that discrimination is reversed it is just as wrong. There should be no concessions made for any religion but there should be no reasonable restriction either.

Am not debating wether or not religious equality is applied in reality, only discussing the ideal behind the Constitution clause, that government politics and ideals must be secular, non associated to any particular religion. If so, such religion would indeed impact on decisions and laws passed. It is simple logic. Unless you are completely removed from all the participating parties, you will be, if even minorly, biased towards whatever party you are attached to. Thus, if one wants no particular religions to be unfairly treated or overly treated, one must never be associated to any of them in particular. That is the idea behind whats written in the Constitution. It is an indirect guideline, such as when you write a law saying "One must not harm another human being, or he shall be punished", you are indirectly saying Do Not murder other people, since that is a form of harm. It is not directly written, but it holds true nonetheless. That is how the idea of government and religious segregation came to be.

but we all make decisions based on our own past experiences. to hold your ideal, that religion and government should not mix then ANYONE with a religious back ground should be disqualified from holding public office because there is no way you can completely keep your religion from influencing your decisions. The founding of this country was based on the Christian beliefs of the day. Yes for the most part they are common sense and many of the references to a almighty being are generalized such as these words from our Declaration of Independence.

It may not specifically state it but by joining with or endorsing a religion you make it a religion of the government. In turn this opens the door for abuse and corruption with no official say but an implied, "Join this religion, or else." People can have religion, people can hold moral values established by religion, but the only values the government should have are the combined ethics of all those with a hand in it whose only books of faith should be legislative in nature.

While they might not be the brightest people, they certainly will vote and follow their pastor's bidding, the pastor is supposed to be a moral example, someone well versed in biblical language and, thus, the moralities therein. If I believed, I would find it hard not to vote for Bush of my spiritual leader told me so.
This is why I appreciate Mennonites, only sect of Christianity I think I respect, free thinkers, separation of church and state. etc.

One cannot achieve for perfection for it is impossible, but having perfection as a goal brings forth improvements.
