I will be honest: If someone dont have AV then he are stupid or know nothing about computers.
If someone dont wanna any virus then he need disconnect his internet

if someone need internet and affraid viruses then he can minimize danger by:
Use good antivirus with often updates and good firewall
To serfing in internet use Opera, Mozzila or other similar program but NOT IE(no matter 6, 7 or higher)
Off there ActiveX plugins, dont allow automatic plugin installs and off flash plugins.
If someone use Windows system then he need update it offten too (XP SP3, Vista SP2, Win7 SP1)
Someone rly scared can use MacOS or Linux
Dont use regular mail client like Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express. Use Firebird or similar.And there make up all internal protections.

Well as I said..I use a free AV...But, there was a time I didnt use any...And yes, I did watch porn once in a while, BUT, I held on to that windows for more than 8 months, and it ran smoothly ( that until some settings got screwed and I had to reinstall)...But now, since Im using AV, I usually reinstall windows once ever month or 2....No matter if I'm on XP, vista, 7...I used them all...And, the windows which lasts me most is xp..

Avast! works fine for me.

Iobit 360, ASC, PC Tools/Threatfire. Alone these have each caught more system intrusions then all the others combined. Best part is they're all free and take up almost no RAM.

Spybot is best in my opinion. Plus its free. And avast failed to catch 5 viruses.

AVG sucks, it really really sucks. It will miss several viruses while whoring your CPU/RAM like Norton. Get a good virus program, I personally use ESET(NOD32) because its reliable and does not hog system resources.

I hear mixed reviews on several different Anti-virus programs, some say Spybot, some say no spy bot. Some suggest a program called Antivir, others don't suggest it.

I have been told that it is a good idea to get a root kit tool to remove Root kits if they get on your system. I was told this program works good, despite it being from McAfee:

I don't watch porn, I don't use google to find pirate sites, and I don't open any "Viagra Discount" emails in my inbox(HOW DID THEY KNOW??). Hence, I have not gotten a virus, trojan, adware, or even a warning, in 2 years. Common sense > Anti-virus programs, but its still good to have an AV just in case you run into the other 5%.

Avg really does suck now, back then it was good, but since they updated, its been shit.

Eset is a really good antivirus program, I used it till it ran out, then I started using Avira antivir, which is free btw.

Spybot is okay, But Id recommend malware bytes,its free and it find almost all spyware malware viruses, its really good.

So I recommend getting a good antivirus+Malware bytes.

Actually, I'm using ESET Smart Security, which is the advanced version of NOD32, but also has an integrated firewall. This combined with my built-in firewall in the router pretty much solves anything, didn't have any problems in the past 3 years.

1. I never said Nod32 was the best, I said I prefer it. I specifically said there are mixed reviews about different AV's.

2. I said 95% of viruses are from porn/email/pirate, I specifically said you should have an AV just in case you run into the other 5%. Most of my friends know how to use a computer, they know a ton about computer security. I still scan anything they give me.

3. I use several of the programs you mentioned, but I still haven't found any critical vulnerabilities yet. Last thing I found was a trojan in a program I had downloaded, but ESET caught it when I scanned it.

4. I just wanted to post a simple reply to a simple problem, I didn't really think the guy wanted to hear a giant post about security. I didnt even recommended him a firewall, which is just as important as an AV.
