Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
a private server is a very fine line to walk rly for the people hosting it
if they charge to play on it then its illegal
but if u have played on a wow private server u constantly here how they accept "donations" in exchange for ingame items and bonuses
but just playing on a hosted server is not illegal

How much do you think a private server would cost?

That's not bad
And I get a good connection for euro servers
EDIT: and sess is right as well; it's not illegal if it's free

So...
technically, if we get a private server, it would hardly cost anything?
we could all, like, chip in a couple of dollars a month?

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
I doubt ppl would do that since they barely do for the servers atm =D
But yeah it would like that. We could change around things, XP gain (For exmaple) where certain items can be bought, etc.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
Well it will be almost free, I would rather we pay each of us who wants to play on server since 1 euro is not much, but such game can lure hundreds maybe thousand of players, so for single person 4000 euros/month is huge, and it's not fair, Champ pays a lot alone and I would help but I don't have credit card, best job I found is ice-creaman and they still wont let me get one credit card. Anyway I do have cash I could send some on your bank account or something then you use your credit card and pay my game account, I am not really into that since what I earn today I spend today, I don't have anything with people in suits, you know, nice talking people, bank people and all their boring papers. It would be best if JvS server would be original as Bioware's or it will be ruined like Aion game where XP is disaster (like you harvest a flower and you get 60 000 xp and you are level 20 right away, or quest bug since lot of quests has its XP amount).

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
i read page 1, skipped 2-13 and read this last page. i figured it was all basically about the same thing which was the pay to play deal.
i myself am going into the gaming industry and along with that i plan on making an mmo at some point. i can tell you that the 13,14,or 15 dollar a month charge is something that is very nessassary all the time. you've gotta pay the people who made the game, so a short list... producer, designers, artists, music artists, modlers, story writers, voice actors, ect. they need to pay for all there servers, that is for upkeep and maintanece.
there's round the clock game masters they need to play, people who watch the servers and transactions for any suspicious activities, people for costumer service, people for account registration, people for billing, people who maintain the websites, i think you get it.
so basically, what you guys are saying is to screw those people who take time out of their lives to make the game as good as it can be just because you dont feel like paying at most 16$ a month... real nice of you all... maybe i will go ahead and put my security system into all my games so itll take years for people to figure out how to crack them...
now like i said, i skipped the other 12 pages because i figured they were all going to be about the same thing so if this sounds familiar, it didn't sound so to me.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
your quite wrong actually. Non mmo games have customer service, website maintainers, billers, account handlers for online playing. Say Dirt 2 or Bad Company. Apart from game masters and servers, non mmos and mmo games have pretty much teh same staff, NOT TO MENTION, mmo games have areeeaaally low cost when it comes to programming them, compare to physical demeaning games, and in the end, you pay as much to by WOW as you do to buy Assassins Creed. a regular mmo gains about 1-3 million users when it hits, thats 1-3 million x 16 20, even 30 dollars sometimes. game masters are paid as much as a game tester is, wich is very little, dont make a life out of it i assure you. So, a non mmo, with JUST the initial sale of the game, can pay for a more demanding programming team, artist team and market team, while an mmo, for a few more employees and maintaining a server( btw, they have their own servers, they just pay for routine inspections and electricity) costs 16 - 48 million dollars a month? Sir, i call bullshit.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
im gonna be a producer(maybe) designer artist programmer modeler and story writer, so thanks for the advise, but that's ok, ive got it under control. and yes they do have the same staff, would you like me to go get my text and list all the people who are involved in creating a game? i didnt evne go into marketing and shipping, that and the peopel who clean the building, bring people lunch, ext. i could sit here for awhile and list all the people it takes to make a game if i wanted too. and for the record, WoW is 30$ maybe 40$ but im pretty sure i got WotLK for 30$ while the other games are now priced 60$ so they get double the same or more amount of people, for a console game and that money pretty much goes into making there next game and along with maintaining their multiplayer servers, website, w/e.
have you actually read some of the update logs for WoW that they do every week =o. they tend to be pretty long. i kinda wanna get the old DAoC logs and look over those again. and yes some do have their own servers, but they still have to pay the producers who own those servers to use them, hence why servers get shut down. it's weird i know.
as for all that money, i wont be able to give you an anwser till i start working i nthe industry and if i am still in contact with you all then i shall let you know.
as for me, i plan on creating a normal game and then an mmo sqeual to it which i still havn't fully decided on how to write the story line for it, i need more characters, apprently 37 aren't enough. and along with that mmo, i plan to have it so that ill run with the same quality as the original game. maybe to you itll be a site to see if i ever get to making it. and the normal game is 30$ rarly do pc games go above 40$... cept MW2... fuckign activision...

good luck with that. BTW, activision/Blizzard. also, about 50 people, not counting cleaning personnel.
i agree with paying monthly fees, i just think given the number of people they get to pay, 16 dollars per month to PLAY a SINGLE GAME, is too much. 3-5 dollars is more than enough, to get profit and pay for maintenance. the 30 dollars wow costs is becuz wow was made in a weekend. Honestly, its easiest game to mak.
EDIT: Thats 50 people for a game, not talking about a game company. The number doubls/triples there.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
basically good companies, e.g. Turbine keep running a game for a while and either reach their profit goal or are not receiving enough profit so they switch to f2p. They have this system of having content that needs to be paid for to reach full level, but u can earn their points by playing the game AND the points are not necessarily expensive. And by using them u keep the content FOREVER, no monthly fee unless u really want to. Imo that's a reasonably good business plan though I'm sure no one wants to run around in TOR and find places off limits cuz u haven't purchased the full stuff, but allows freebies to enjoy the game and most ppl will end up paying for that content even if it is optional. And you can get it all for around $100-120 which is not much considering that means 12 dollars a month and the access is permanent not just for an year.

actually, im thinking about doing a free online one with a cash shop since they seem to be the most effective way to gain money. i alone can drop 25+ in game points for my one game every week. even WoW started to adpot the cash shop because of the profit gain in it. but we shall see when i go to make it. the AI system that ive thought of is so complex that i may need a lot of people strictly for its maintenance and up keep.

Re: Star Wars the Old Republic
It is still different then like buying a car where after you get car you have to pay for benzine so you can drive them. I don't have anything against buying original game and with it paying to people who made it, but to run it I already pay electricity power here and for internet connection, and it kinda looks selfish, you give money to get the game and it is yours but then you need to give money again and again for game to be yours since if you don't you don't have the game you bought. So I don't have mind if I pay more cheaper private server who can do same thing as those in bioware (tho bioware can always surprise with something good and be free or cheaper then we are expecting, lucas arts is who I am worried about) which everything ends on their electricity. If this is WoW killer then in short time it should have more then 11 millions players, and if each pays more 15$, well thats huge money (knowing that this game is not only one that brings them money). I know when I sell my picture I dont charge it monthly to a person who wants to look at it when that person owns it. People who run tOR servers (which will probably be less then 10 people) will be rich even if we (each player) give them 1-5 $ monthly. Makers of the game are payed with us buying the game.

You dont need people to maintain code .....You need people for database and hardware maintenance..
