haha yeah i practice multiple martial arts, almost like a mma type thing. taekwondo is my "base" however.

weakness? thats jsujt the most basic one. the average crook can still kick your ass. martial arts are very technique dependent unfortunately. a few arent, and mixing them certainly helps you cover for each others faults, but still. i wouldnt rely on them for my defense.

ahhh your one of those, well im not going to get into this arguement/debate.

im just going to say that martial arts gets a bad rep as far as self defense is concerned because of people who say they practice a martial art but dont have a true understanding of anything they are taught. martial arts originated as teaching soldiers how to fight in war, and i wouldn't go saying that any soldier "would get his ass kicked by the average crook"

soldiers no, but the average martial artist is pathetic. there are also people who are eximious at hand to hand fighting with no training. sometimes youre just an animal.

i will say that proper martial training gives you very good reflexes, wich are essential.

well yes if the person is in way better physical shape than yourself naturaly it puts you at a very large disadvantage. also i would like to point out the differance between traditional and sports martial arts. i would also prefer to not be called pathetic, as someone who actualy has been jumped out in the real world and someone who has been in a real fight. i will tell you from first hand experiance that knowing what i was doing in a hand to hand combat situation realy helps. of course i probably come across as some punk over the internet so you have no real reason to believe me.

i just think that if you went to a martial art studio that wasn't a total joke you would actualy learn how to defend yourself in a real way. there are in fact a lot of places that will say they can teach you to defend yourself but are untested and are a total scam

i guess im just a little offended because i dont think that the average martial artist is pathetic, and im farely certain that you dont know that for a fact you just dont think about it in the same light that i do. and since i am one of those pathetic people i guess that im a little butt hurt whether or not you were refering to me as well.

the average person who call themselves martial artists are pathetic. wether they deserve to be called one or not is different, but you know more into it than i do

and yes i meant practical martial arts. sports is a totally diferent thing.

and more to the point, the fact that if a random person tells me they know martial arts doesnt scare me the least one bit, makes a pretty good case for how many people out there talk out of their asses about this stuff.

You're thinking of those who get their blackbelts because they or their parents throw enough money at it. Having been trained in martial arts and had to use it I'll tell you that it gives an advantage, but not like Bruce Lee. You see the entire point of martial arts is to condition your mind and body, you give someone a walk through of moves as counters to being attacked in different ways and then you drill it over, and over, and over until they no longer need to think about it. That's the point, and the fact that I stopped over 5 years ago but still react to certain stimuli without thinking or trying attests to the fact that it works.

It's not perfect, some people are very good at fighting naturally, and direct training and instinct will make up for a lack of technique. But for the average guy, marital arts give them an advantage against a random attacker. It works Dray, whether you want it to or not, yes there are people who have "trained" and can't defend themselves, but in that case they didn't really train.

lol dont worry yin, dray's just being an ass. i know for a fact that martial arts help your defense. because i was walking around with me and buddy(he practices jeet kun doe which was created by bruce lee along with two other martial arts) and theres was these 5 guys that tried walkin up to us acting tough and shit. trying to represent the Blood gang even though im pretty sure they were jus posers. and he kicked SO MUCH ass like i cant really describe what he did. all i can say is he crushed their attempt at jumping us. i literally only had to take on 2 guys while in the corner of my eyes i saw him went around two guys punches and did two major really fast rib shots. then did this kick to this guys chest and he fell so fast xD man do i wish someone was recording it.
