i use gimp actually... i don't know much of anything about photoshop tbh.. nor do i know much about gimp... sometime i can send you what i came up with... sucks tho lol

First is just a text add, I can tell by design. Second is a radient blend background(something in gimp where you select two colors and then it makes a scale between them like green to white), then he added a render and text.

Thats the basis to what you all do. Just you guys normally add other smaller effects and blends, but the basis is that.

If you want to simplify it to: background, character, words. Then yes it is a very simplistic description of what others do. But actually backgrounds are usually much more involved then you think and rely on pictures, brushes, opacity, and filters. Renders are less involved and usually just factor in blurred edges to get a blend and perhaps a light opacity filtered background added over-top for depth. Text is usually the simplest and relies more on flare and choice then difficulty or complexity.

40 layers? Next stop in your improvement of photoshop handling: Efficiency. 40 layers for a signature is overloading a bit.

Well if it's animation then it's not unusual to get that many layers, but depends on how complex his background and render blend is it could plausibly get that high. Albeit the maximum number of layers I've ever needed was 15 for non-animation.

He is pratically using a layer per brush stroke.

Ah I don't think you understand sigs very well. First you do a transparent background, add a full color background, add a C4D layer or whatever brush and filter combination you wish instead(complex sigs can require two or more of these layers), add brush layers(depends on how many colors you want in the sig decrees how many of these layers are necessary for an organic look) this can vary anywhere from 2-3 to 8-10 layers, add render and blur(more then one render or using a fainter version will require another layer for each), add text(depending on how many colors or fonts decides how many layers), add filter to give effect to the words(again each effect is at least one layer, sometimes as many as 3 layers for 1 effect), add final touches like gloss for the last layer.

After you do this then you can decide how many of them you want to merge and in what order to get the final result.

and btw, I do think 40 layers is a bit much,

I usually have about 10 or a little more.

Ps. I usually use the render itself for the color.

40 layers? Holy cow, that's way too many dude! I do think you're trying to brag about it though.

the UB that i made ended up with 5 layers when i handed it off. Do not know what it ended up with.

back ground, the fade of the background, text, yellow Saber, blue saber.

I know that you can use many layers for different blurs/contrasts/layer modes for each. But... yeah.

For animations I use to have 4-500 layers :3
