So much for the US being a secular nation
This guy was a bit confused, this is actually the 4th verse of the star spangled banner.
The Star-Spangled Banner
First Verse
Oh, say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro' the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watch'd, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air
Gave proof thro' the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say, does that Star-Spangled Banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Second Verse
On the shore, dimly seen thro' the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream;
'Tis the Star-Spangled Banner, O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Third Verse
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Fourth Verse
Oh, thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto, "In God is our trust"
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

In 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote new words for a well-known drinking song, "To Anacreon," to celebrate America's recent victory over the British. It was only in 1931, following a twenty-year effort during which over forty bills and joint resolutions were introduced in Congress, that a law was finally signed which proclaimed The Star-Spangled Banner to be the national anthem of the United States. The present copy, one of only five known to have been made by Key, is the earliest of four dating from the period 1840-1842 near the end of his life.

The U.S. is taking a rather strong anti-Christian stance, where as they don't seem to care at all about other religions. Pto's pointing out that we still have the Star Spangled banner as our national anthem which has some strong Christian views in it, especially the fourth verse.

That represents the nation. They took "Under God" out of the pledge of allegiance, it's surprising that they haven't done the same with the national anthem.

You seem to think that the Supreme Court actually has enough to do that they wouldn't write another verse that omits the sentence. It's not so much that I dislike them changing things like this, I just get pissed off that they do this when there's so much other shit out there that actually NEEDS fixed.

yeah, who cares, its just a song, representative of the original american spirit. and its a song. it is...abstract, not a formal introduction to the country.

You're all wrong. The "joke" was that he said it was the second verse when, in reality, he was singing the fourth.

Re: So much for the US being a secular nation
To answer Dist, I don't know, to me, "God" is fairly vague as it can imply Allah as well, and Buddhist just don't give a fuck. As for the anti-Christian stand, they seem to be targeting any instance in which the government makes reference to a Deity of any sort, and since the Founders of the U.S. were Christian, this means reference to Christian God. And for some unexplained reason they decided to prick them off more by eliminating the "national day of prayer" which I have no idea why they even needed to mess with it.

Re: So much for the US being a secular nation
I agree, God tends to be ambiguous, as we call them gods anyway, but as people love to complain and politicians have turned into D-list celebrities doing whatever they can for lime-light, they change the shit anyway, then they change it back so the cameras come back after being bored. Just look at the gay marriage issue: "It's Legal," "It's Illegal," "It's Legal," "It's Illegal."

LET THEM FUCKING MARRY AND STAY THERE YOU FUCKING DIVAS.
i personally believe that we are our own gods, or some other alien species is, and upon discovering time travel, we traveled back to the beggining of the universe, just to find that their existence in the absolute unexistence of space caused the travelers to desintegrate and be the Big Bang.

Nope had nothing to do with it. just for a show of hands, how many of you knew there was more than one verse to the national anthem?
And it does matter because it gives you in site as to the state of mind of our founding fathers. People tend to forget that this country was founded on a strong Christian foundation. yes they wanted anyone to be able to practice what ever religion they want here thus the clause that says that Congress shall enact no law establishing a religion. The establishment clause.
you cannot read your Bible and pray to the christian God in school but we have to provide prayer rooms and foot baths to our Muslim brothers. Christian literature is banned and confiscated but the Koran and anything to do with the Muslim religion is not only encouraged it is taught in the 'spirit' of diversity. There is an assault on the founding principals of the US and we are allowing it.

Hey Dray, that's my theory!
And yeah, I had to memorize all four verses, and recite them with no warning in the 8th grade for the entire year.

Re: So much for the US being a secular nation
errr foot baths? Where? And the thing is, we don't need prayer rooms, can pray pretty much anywhere long as its clean.
The only favor I could say is allowing to grow beard/ wear religious headgear etc. but not allowing that is against constitution.
