Neil Armstrong
Neil Armstrong died yesterday. I guess my question/debate posed to you all is did he really walk on the moon? I find that he's an inspiration to many, and I myself believe he did in-fact walk on the moon, but I'll leave it up to you guys

This bugs me. Now I have my own opinion on the whole moon landing matter, but that would take a few pages to deal with and I'm not willing to do that, suffice it to say I believe it happened, just not the way we saw. No the thing that bugs me is calling the man a "hero". He had courage, maybe, but in his time he already knew the rocket would work, we'd already sent a guy into orbit, but we still call HIM the hero. Not the scientists that actually studied and developed technology that would work, scientists that were pretty much working ENTIRELY on theory. I believe he was notable, but if anyone deserves credit for the landing it should be the people who made it possible not the guy who rode their work up and I don't believe either should be labeled heroes.
Someone that runs into a burning building to rescue someone is a hero. Someone that runs down an armed criminal with no support is a hero. Someone that holds the line to protect someone he's never met is a hero. Riding a rocket does not make you a hero, and in my eyes it never will.
Now, into my bomb shelter for the replies.

Re: Neil Armstrong
All i will say to this is, If the rocket had failed on the surface of the moon, there was no back up plan. They would have died there.
Making that trip knowing that it could be one way, makes them heroes in my book.

Re: Neil Armstrong
The rocket had been thoroughly tested, yes IF it failed they would have been fucked, if a boat sinks in the middle of the Carribean you're fucked too, but I don't call people who go on cruise rides heroes. I know that's a bit of a simplification, but still he's notable, not a hero. He didn't do that in an attempt to save someone's life or protect someone's freedom, he did it so the U.S. could lord it over the Soviet Union.
