Gaming laptop
I'm thinking of investing in a new gaming laptop. I went on Alienware and customized one that I wanted (within reason) and I wanna know what you think.
Intelcore i7 processor at 2.2 but can go up to 3.3
Windows 7
8gb dual memory DDR3 1333mhz
1.5gb GDDR5 Nvidia GeForce GTX 560M
320gb HD
18in screen
There's other small stuff but this is the main stuff I look at in terms of computers.

Re: Gaming laptop
That's quite awesome. Don't think you'll need a new one for like, at least 5-8 years, depending on how reliable it is, and how good care you take of it.
Edit: Btw, I've had an alienware PC, and I must say that it was an utter disappointment. It had similar specs to what you said, and it broke down in 2 weeks. Good thing I could get my money back.

Think about cost of a warranty as well, remember what we went through with your current laptop.
Not to mention that you will be carrying this thing arround school all day every day.

It is an Alienware laptop. Is there anywhere else where you can customize a laptop besides Alienware?

New specs for something significantly cheaper from Dell XPS even without the 10% discount
2nd gen intel core i7 processor at 2.20 capable of going up to 3.30
Microsoft Office 2010 (at a student rate)
3 year extended warranty
Nvidia GeForce 555M 3gb with Optimus
1 TB HDD
17.3 in screen
Blu-Ray disc tray
8gb shared DDR3 dual channel memory
90WHr battery life (no tsure if that means hour and a half or what)
Windows 7
1.7k as opposed to 2.2k from the first. I think I like this option better.

Actually that's better than the alienware. Oh and btw. Alienware laptops are heavy as shit. They're heavier than an ordinary pc box.

also 90WHr means it eats 90 wats per hour. and in a gaming laptop thats kinda standard i guess now.
as for buying this....well to be honest ara, if i were you, id hold off a bit longer...intel is in the process of making hexacores(i7 is a quad-core processor with multi threading giving it double the core power, hence 8 virtual cores per se. hexa cores have 6 physical core processors, wich if added with multi threading technology, gives you 12 virtual cores.)
wich will increase computer power tremendously, also current nVidias and ATIs are in a plateaud time of development. IF i were you, id see in winter what you could get. right now you have very little power per buck.
that 555m is kinda meh, but its better than mine soi wont complain.

Well, the purchase is kind of two fold. The computer I have now works well, has very little wrong with it. I want to buy this now simply because I can hand this computer off to my Mom who needs it A LOT because her computer is going out and she needs a stable computer to do her schoolwork on. I would heed your advice and see how this processor thing goes, but Mom kinda needs the computer more now because we dunno when that computer she has will run out.
Edit: How long does that make my battery life with 90WHr?

Re: Gaming laptop
hard to say...depends more on how energy efficient your PC is, rather than the battery. either way, you shouldnt be gaming unless plugged in, so as long as it lasts a bi over an hour, im not one to complain. gaming laptops will always be a bit short on battey compared to others. mine lasts about 1h and 30 minutes on balanced or economical. unless i start to play games lol. then again, my laptop always had a shortcoming when it came to power and size.
my laptop is 75w btw. given that your laptop iwll have increased processor power and graphics, the upping in battery is more or less...proportionate.

oh btw, im abit of an idiot and since i dont search much on hardware, i get behind the news. THERE IS a hexacore on the market from intel, but only on desktops. laptops have yet to receive hexacore technology.
