Re: Cub-ah
Pretty much the same deal with the US and the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan, US meddles in foreign affairs and it backfires on them. Too bad Cuba does not have oil or other resources the US needs so the US had no need to help the people. Castro has most of the populace living in fear, they do not even dream of revolting. All the youth I spoke to in Cuba want change, and do not want Castro in power. It will be interested to see what happens in the brief power vacuum when Castro dies.
Cuba itself is frozen in time, the cars, houses everything was like it was in the 50's, except with 5-6 decades of decay. It's a shame really, because Cuba was not only one of the few modernized Latino countries, but it was modernized and on pace with even the USA. Hell, the Cuban peso was worth more than the dollar at one point. Cuba had the largest sugar industry in the world and was set to be a major player on the world scene. Now its just a rotting corpse and shell of its former self.
I am not sure if the Island will ever recover fully, but I can assure you the Cuban people are unlike most Latin american countries (no offense to anyone else here). Cubans are extremely industrious people, probably one of the most hardest working in the world, and on top of that they are highly educated. If Castro did anything right, he kept the educational system in Cuba in tip top shape. To this day I can go to Cuba and talk Cosmology, Evolution and many other complex scientific topics and they not only understand but will engage you with interest and knowledge. I found that lacking in almost every other Latin American country I have been to.
One good thing has come out of it all, the Cubans are very wary of US "aid". And while will most likely allow commercialization of the Island once Castro is gone, I doubt they will ever trust the US politically again.
