Learn how to skin!!

I recently learned Anterias the basics of how to re-skin!

Well, Bael did most, but Still.


So I thought I would just make a short topic of what you need when skinning!
Remember though, this is for beginners, experienced Skinners who wants to learn more, come see me at xfire:

So let's start with Programs:

First, a great tutorial made by Bael:

Then you will need Modview and Pakscape:

Winrar will be needed too!:

Now you have the Programs needed to finish a reskin!


Now you need the program to Reskin with!!!


That can be any Photo-editing program, such as Photoshop, Gimp or Paint for those who want.



Now you can learn how to Skin, which is Really simple in the beginning, but will be harder the further you get. Wink

you're welcome to make clan skins, I don't like to do them cause it can ruin awesome skins, unless its a PNG or you can make it look discreet.

Is t possible that i get thse programs on a seperate computer like my laptop and do the skinning there without the game installed? then just transfer the skins in pk3 form or host them on filefront? But then how would i get the skins to skin without jk installed?

Well I think its possible. Just copy (or something) the files you need from your base folder to a DVD. Or you could just copy the entire base folder to a DVD.

This way whenever you need the files you can get them from the disc and save them on your laptop.

I was thinking a flash drive. I think all i need is assets 1 from gamedata or the entire base jka gamedata. If i can get the hang of skining then i bet i can come up with alot of cool stuff. How do you take peices of othe rmodels and put them on anouther model? and how can you take textures from pictures and use them on the model? Is it hard to make things shiney?

Well there's a special tool to copy pieces from other skins, but I can't tell you the name of it because my Gimp interface is in Bulgarian Im less then a begginer at skinning so I dont know how hard it would be to make something shiney. For pictures you need to find some without background (as far as I know) and then just copy & paste them on your skin, then find the tool that moves them exactly where you want them, again I dont know its name in English.

About taking parts of other models and putting them on your model, I have no idea, but I think Thing knows how to do it.

As for assets 1 , so far its the only thing I needed but you could always copy the other stuff too just incase you need them.

What does modview do?

ModView lets you see how does your model look in 3D. For instance if you put an insignia somewhere on the skin and you dont know if its on the left or right shoulder, you can just save the skin and press "Refresh Texture" in ModView to see on wich shoulder you putted it.

If you dont like the changes you can just CTRL+Z until you can place it on another place.

In short ModView lets you see what changes you made on the skin.
