Jedi Academy crashes
I was having trouble with my game earlier, because I was back to using an older graphics card driver after reinstalling windows. It'd work fine, but every once in a while it'd crash. I had dealt with this problem before and solved it by simply upgrading the driver. I decided to do it again with this new copy of windows only to discover that it made my problem much worse. JK3 loads then crashes at the Jedi Academy screen just before the raven logo and main screen. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling past versions of the driver, but with no luck. It's still the same problem. The funny thing is that I don't get a console error message or anything so I'm starting to think it's not entirely graphics related. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I could do?
Also I am already running in compatibility mode and as an administrator, I have uninstalled and reinstalled, I have removed all pk3s from the base folder, I have removed the japlus folder from the gamedata folder, I have tried running it without compatibility mode, and I have tried running it in different compatibility modes for the different xp service packs

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Sounds like what my game did with the Open GL 1.4 update. It wouldn't get past the initial loading screen. I'm using ATI drivers and I used a special workaround I found that takes the Open GL 1.3 drivers from Catalyst 10.4 and converts the file. You then place the new file in any of your Open GL games executable folder and the game will run. I can walk you through it if you like.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Yeah that'd be extremely helpful. I'm using ATI drivers as well.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
OK, here goes... First you take the atioglxx.dl_ file from Catalyst 10.4 and older versions and convert that to atioglxx.dll in Command Prompt. The atioglxx.dl_ file is in your C:\ATI folder somewhere with a bunch of other similar files. If you uninstalled Catalyst, you can simply decompress the files and pull from that without having to do a full install.
Use this command in Command Prompt to convert the file, "expand atioglxx.dll_ atioglxx.dll". No quotes or period IIRC, try the quotes if that doesn't work. You then take the new file you just created and put it in the same folder as the games executable, for Jedi Academy that is the Gamedata folder. Now it should run. This works for all Open GL based games that won't run with the new version of Open GL. Call of Duty I has the same problem I believe, for example. Any further problems, let me know.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Actually I managed to get it working by deleting the ATI folder and installing an older version of catalyst. Thanks for the help though! I'll definitely come back to this page and use that idea when I have to upgrade to a more recent driver.
Edit: Nvm it worked one time and then started crashing again...

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Jedi Academy should work fine with 10.4 and older versions of Catalyst. Don't recommend deleting the ATI folder but uninstalling through the Control Panel and then using Driver Cleaner Pro to remove what remains in the registry. Then, you are green light for reinstall.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Running 10.2 now. Uninstalling the new vesrion and reinstalling the older version doesn't appear to be doing anything at all to help. It's the first thing that I tried.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Did you try cleaning with Driver Cleaner Pro after you uninstalled? I select all ATI options and clean with them after all driver uninstalls. It's free and may get files causing the problem.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
I don't have Driver Cleaner Pro I don't know what the official site for it is. I managed to convert the .dl_ into a .dll and put it in the gamedata folder, but it still crashes just like before.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
There's no need this is a graphics issue. This started happening RIGHT after I decided to update the driver. For whatever reason its like I'm not fully able to uninstall whatever it is that's causing JA to crash. Whenever I uninstall ATIs shit and try to install an older version it immediately crashes after the Jedi Academy screen.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Do you have motherboard video? It might be conflicting with the driver and thus causing the issues. Try disabling the onboard video manually in hardware devices then attempting a driver fix if so.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Ok I tried that program after uninstalling. It did remove a few files, but not the ones that are causing JA to crash. I don't have a graphics card built into the motherboard either. I use a ATI Radeon HD 5800 and windows 7.
Originally the game worked, but would crash every once in a while so I updated the driver by downloading the new driver + the new version of Catalyst Control Center from the website. Then I started experiencing this problem where the game would fail after starting. It has to be something with the latest version of the driver or Catalyst Control Center.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
OK, so you uninstalled Catalyst completely, used DC Pro with all ATI cleaners, rebooted, installed Catalyst 10.6, rebooted, put the converted Open GL file in the Gamedata folder and it still doesn't work?
I had the exact same problem as you and this fixed it. Actually, everyone using ATI that has updated past 10.4 Catalyst should have this problem. Most likely nVidia users also.

I uninstalled Catalyst Control Center 10.6, uninstalled the driver, ran DC Pro, restarted, installed catalyst 10.6, restarted, converted the atioglxx.dl_ into atioglxx.dll, placed the atioglxx.dll file into c:\Program Files\LucasArts\Star Wars Jedi Knight Jedi Academy\GameData, and tried playing it.

Which version of Catalyst is the converted Open GL file from? Can only be 10.4 or older.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
TBH, mine would freeze at the Jedi Academy initial loading screen not crash after it. Could be something else than the Open GL file compatibility. I suggest Google "Jedi Academy crash load screen", no quotes and see what that produces. I couldn't find anything myself.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
Hey I just wanted to thank you for the help. I might just reinstall windows and not upgrade past 10.4 and if that doesn't work then I guess I just won't be playing JA anymore.

Re: Jedi Academy crashes
NP, reinstalling Windows then Catalyst 10.4 should work. Back up your save data first, as always. Hopefully I can duel you one of these days.
