Most influential scientist Empty Most influential scientist

Post by Aardvark Wed Mar 10, 2010 6:38 am

Throughout history there have been many in the field of science, but few of these scientists are truly influential on society. Some may gain a little bit of publicity for a short amount of time, but who in this field is truly the most influential of all? So I've brought up a vote to decide this, at least in the clan, please pick one, and if you believe I've left out someone you think is more notable then please vote other and say who you believe is the most influential scientist. These will be listed in chronological order according to date of birth:

Leonardo da Vinci was a ingenious inventor of his time with many ideas and designs original in thought that stretched the imagination of the people of the time, and in some cases of people in our own time. He is considered the original Renaissance Man with fields of study in: mathematics, engineering, inventing, anatomy, painting, sculpting, architecture, botany, music, and writing.

Gallileo Galilei is considered the father of astronomy. He was among the first in his field and made countless observations, some proven right, some wrong, but paved the way for the field, even in his mistakes.

Issac Newton is one of the most well known names in science for his observation of physical laws many of which are named after the man himself. His theories catapulted science forward by laying down common factors that can be observed and are still true today. Through these observations science could proceed at a much faster pace then before.

Charles Darwin while not an extremely intelligent man himself set forth the theories of Evolution and Natural Selection, and through this brought new ideas and concepts into the field on medicine and biology. Many of the medical break throughs in the last 100 years have been due in part to his proposed theories.

Nikola Tesla is the foremost scientist in the fields of electricity and magnetism and through many of his own theories we can enjoy the technology we use today. Without his influence on the industry modern technology would be decades behind it's current state because of the lack of control over the currents we use to power our machines.

Erwin Schrodinger is perhaps the most infamous name in quantum physics. He is most well-known for his cat theory and the Schrodinger Equation, both of which are still being debated to this day and may hold the key to our progress in the field of quantum physics.

Marie Curie is the Mother in the field of radioactive study and developed many of the techniques we use today concerning the field. Without her work kimo-therapy and nuclear powered fusion would never have been developed, as well as the Nuclear Weapon never being discovered(Something the woman never had a part of but that her discoveries eventually lead to).

Albert Einstein is perhaps the MOST well known scientist of all time with study in the field of physics that revolutionized and vindicated the field. His theories are just that, ones on the theoretical plain, and while we have(relatively) not had much to do with practical application, will be vital to future endeavors.

Stephen Hawking is currently the most influential scientist living today. The man has brought about many changes in the field of technology and quantum theory. He is regarded highly for challenging many proofs and developing theories as to the nature of reality itself.

This is a moot point. There is simply no way to make the comparison on who is more influential. I can at most name 3 or 4 who became more vital and well known, but not pin point an exact one.

Galileu, Newton, Einstein and Hawking are the great 4 if you wish to call them that.

So ill just vote on my favourite one. Tesla.

Newton without a doubt. His theory of gravitation and the famous book Principia Mathematica changed science to an even greater degree than even einstein has.

*sniffs* i smell nerdism..

anywho i think generally they all are great by changing the world with there ideas which at the time were criticized and looked down upon. But if i had to choose one of them i would go with mah buddy Charlie up der. He realized that only the strong survive which is true. You must be strong in not only body but in mind to overcome challenges and obstacles everyday

It's an opinion pole Dray, I want each person's opinion on who had the most influence.

As for me, hmm. I was really torn between three: Leonardo da Vinci because the inventions of his time revolutionized how we proceeded with science, Marie Curie because without her work we could never hope to move beyond our own planet, Nuclear fusion is really the only power source strong enough to use if we ever attempt to colonize other planets, and Albert Einstein, the great mind in the realm of physical theory that will hold the key to our progress as a species for centuries to come.

Overall thought I think I will have to go with Marie Curie. I know, odd choice, but I truly think the field of radioactivity is the most untapped of all current sciences. She began work with it and we've progressed so far in such a short period that I think once we are truly able to understand the field it will catapult modern day science.

She didnt develop anth to do with Nuclear Fusion, other then working in the field of Nuclear and Radioactivity. we currently use the opposite reaction, Nuclear Fission, wich is what she worked on i believe.

I get Fission and Fusion confused. I know the scientific difference, but I get the names mixed up.

I know, but I didn't think that Schordinger was more well known than heisenburg

Uncertainty principle, ring a bell? heisenburg did that

oh and marie curie would technically have 2 nobel prizes if it wasn't for sexism.

Yes Nihil, I'm using well known names, and yes this is biased towards what I know. I known the history of every person I listed up there and while I have read some things on Heisenburg I had to look to find them.

I think Schrodinger's equation and thought problem have more potential to further the field then Hisenburg's uncertainty principle.

I don't like it, he introduced a field of matrices thingy that just doesn't really have a practical purpose beyond being something new made up, imho.

Its just too biased to be relevant. Not to mention unrelated terms wich make it even less relevant. This should be called the one we admire and think more of then what we call the most influential.
