Derer, die der Lüge dienen, denn schon bald werden sie fallen.
lol, I wish I could go to CERN, we had a vacation which general idea was to visit Cern (going around the half of Europe) but none actually was interested much, anyway, CERN does a great research on these physics I sooooo want to see it, I have read about their researches (thousand posters at the physics cabinet at school), their theory about the Big Bang interested me a lot.
PS: Don't mind my first sentence, its just a random Deutch sentence which I dropped in xD

Re: So Universe...
Holy shit ive had goosebumps for over 10 minutes now as I was researching and reading to make sure this is not a hoax. I don't think some of you realize how big of a step this is for science... I have personally been waiting for this moment over 15 years now.
Here is a source if anyone wants to read
http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/11/18/switzerland.cern.antimatter/
Anti-matter reactors anyone? The ability to travel near the speed of light through space? Almost unlimited energy? etc etc etc...

At the very least, it shows that we are indeed advancing, and havent stalemated in evolution of science.

Re: So Universe...
Interesting. If we can get it under control we may be able to have a clean alternative to nuclear energy.

Re: So Universe...
The funny part is compared to the technology that is conceivable using anti-matter this is like discovering fire for the first time. Humans in the future will look back at this moment and view it as such. If countries like the USA would spend even a small fraction of the military expenditure on things like building LHC we would probably be well more advanced.

Anti matter isnt well...completely clean. Possesses destructive capacity as well, BUT, it does not come with the radiation problems of nuclear power.

I think it'd be more useful for powering what's needed to perform fusion if that makes any sense

It doesnt, Fusion needs to be self sustained and produce energy, it shouldnt need additional energy to produce less energy. In fact, unless it produces many times fold the energy its needed to react, its useless.

Ik. At the current point it needs more energy than it makes

Anti-matter is about as clean an energy source as we're likely to find for the next few centuries.

Re: So Universe...
I'd be more worried about the military use of it than a power plant disaster. Imagine anti-matter bombs and missiles or even anti-matter rays and you get the picture.

Yes that's something that will occur no doubt, all the power of nukes without the radioactive fallout.

At least its clean killing, Nukes have the devastating side effect of causing total impossiblity for humans to live in this world. Nuclear holocaust is a near extinction event for us, exactly because of the cloud, not the explosion itself...at least anti matter is precise.

I can't help but imagine this is how CERN reacted to the news.
I hope we get some crazy sick shit in the next few years to come.

At least nukes had that 'holding back power' or so to say, meaning that people realised that if someone starts a nuclear war, we are all fucked. However, it's always been like that - every single great invention is used for military purposes first. Nevertheless, it's really a major breakthrough, I've been waiting for it ever since they have announced the experiments with antimatter.

THE ONLY REASON i approve of their existence is for alien invasion defense. Just nuke their asses.

Re: So Universe...
anti-matter would be far more effective against aliens I think. I mean.. what kind of defense could you build against an anti-matter weapon? I can see some sort of heat and radiation shield vs a nuke, but against an anti-matter missile? How do you stop that? lol

Also, In that link you posted, Champ, CERN's next goal is to make an anti-matter beam lazer thing.
