Aliens?
Since this could become a debate i put it here.
I don't have a link, but for the ninth day straight in our state, Ohio, there have been UFO sightings, and its fairly interesting, I take no stance on aliens, but you should look it up, over lake Erie in Ohio.

Re: Aliens?
Aliens? Yeah they exist, whether you go by Creationism or Evolution, with all the room out there, there must be alien lifeforms. Now do they come to Earth and fly around? I doubt it, but if a culture did come about parallel to our own, but without the Dark Ages they might very well have that kind of technology.

Re: Aliens?
There is a 99.99% chance that when we find ET, he will loook NOTHING like a human, no 2 arms, no 2 legs etc. The aliens evolution has probably greatly differed from our own, and we do not even know if they are carbon based life forms, or even require water to survive or thrive.

And they can be a lot different sized creatures and can live much longer or shorter. Life from is somewhere there on some planet, maybe more of them then we know, it is hard to imagine that maybe there is much older race then we are cuz they didn't contact us, or they went so far in future with technology that our kind of technology communication is so old for them that they totally forgot that they were in this stage where we are now, or maybe they are in stone age so they barely can understand themselves heh, and so more things that can make your head hurts.

lol i love that guy. i also love his almost fanatical love for Einstein.
and Champ, coming from that non carbon based life forms...this brings up an interesting point. How would you define Life? If living beings can be made of NOTHING of what we are made, how do we define Life? What parameters can distinguish life? quemical and atomical reactions? what about teh Sun? its teaming with molecular activity, does that make it alive? Interesting that life seems easily definable when we see it, yet its hard to put words on what defines it.
There is such a open field to search here.

Re: Aliens?
Well that is the basic argument about virus's. Are they life? They have coding but they lack a cell. Some scientists classify them as a chemical!
life to me is something that manipulates its environment in a way not naturally inherent to a given environment. Thus as an example. wind itself manipulates the environment but it is inherent. But a group of air molecules grouping together and through various means forming an entity that can now manipulate more than just the wind could otherwise, that is life. To me life is what comes out of the building blocks of planetary systems. Is the smaller evolution of planets as a whole.
You could even get crazy and say everything has life, like the ancient pagans. Maybe they were not so far off..

Re: Aliens?
You can't really define life, you just know it when you see it. I suppose the only universal sign of life are two things: Does it eat? Can it be eaten? All life falls into at least one of these categories.

actually living is consisting of both.. hydrogen and nitrogen? I forgot what makes something organic... it's consisting of 2 chemicals... either oxygen, nitrogen, hydrogen and/or carbon... forgot xD

Play Spore and Mass Effect, those games are most close to this and very fun things to play. Some visual things are always fun to see, especially if you are part of them.

Even though most peoples cellphones have a camera built into them the rate of UFO sightings has not increased. If this were real you'd have 1000s of people sending pictures and even video to the news station. I don't think little green men are visiting us or ever will visit us. Life as we do not know it probably does exist somewhere far away. The universe is such a big place it's harder to believe that life is not out there than it is to believe that life is out there.

Re: Aliens?
You just said the universe was such a big place; so what are the odds of "little green men" flying near Earth, when it is so widely unexplored by them? For all we know, there could be a whole intergalactic government going on.

Thats a narrow minded way of thinking. Who is to say something not carbon based could not be "living?"

Mass effects creatures all had a torso, two legs and two arms. I would place more likelihood of life NOT existing than life having the same physical makeup as humans or any Earth life.

Interesting point on the cellphones. I never thought about that. Did you think of that yourself or did you read that somewhere? Either way, reps.

Re: Aliens?
The size of the universe is what makes the odds of our little planet being found and observed by explorers very low. An intergalactic government could exist, but it existing anywhere near here is improbable. We most likely would have seen evidence of it's existence.thing944 wrote:You just said the universe was such a big place; so what are the odds of "little green men" flying near Earth, when it is so widely unexplored by them? Mass Effect does not have all creatures with 2 arms and 2 legs, if you explore the game 100% like I did and land on each planet and explore it 100% you will find other life forms. But you don't need to do that, Citadel Station is enough to see those orange/pink aliens mix of slobber and antennas and they have no problem with gravity and speak in 3d person like I would now bout me:" Cllyx is happy to play Mass Effect". As for spore, there for sure you can make any freak with like one leg and 3 arms with head on one arm and 8 eyes on the foot . There are 5 ages in spore and it is fun to see how all of them look like, when in creature age other aliens explore your planet and examine your kind, when you are in space age you explore space examining other species, build colonies, master with climate changes on planets, if you are skilled race you can turn totally dead planet into life. After all I said those games are most close to this bout we are talking, I didn't say that's how it is in real.
the hanar race was what I was talking bout, hmm, its not pink here....

Re: Aliens?
Actually there's a high likelihood that aliens would be at least near humanoid. In terms of evolution the first things to be developed are the physical, and the ability to have a set of limbs for height and running and another set for dexterity is a logic path to follow.

Re: Aliens?
I agree, if there is a chance somewhere else for a life, there is also chance for them to follow similar path in evolution. But space is big place, maybe there are life forms that we cannot think of based on our logic, imagination and knowledge.

Re: Aliens?
I wouldn't be surprised to find some similarities between creatures on earth and creatures from another planet that is at least similar to earth. Animals on earth have the features that they do, because they enabled them to survive. If you look at two different animals on opposite sides of the earth that live in similar types of areas you will find that they sometimes have features in common with one another. There are few reasons why natural selection should not exist on another planet with life.

You people really need to read Carl Sagan.
Why would limbs be the logical evolutionary thing to develop? Ever see a sea snake? Eels? etc etc.
Not to mention, LOOK AT OUR OWN PLANET. There is a ton of life with either no limbs, more than a few limbs, or adapted limbs. The chance of aliens with intelligence even coming close to this seems distant. Not to mention, who is to say that everything evolved with Earth like conditions requiring limbs? Maybe some creatures even develop wheels or other complicated machinery (its all possible if you look at microorganisms they are very complex and intricate machines.
I once heard a college professor saying that if we did not evolve intelligence as we have, octopus would have in time. They are extremely intelligent, have many limbs and can manipulate things. My point is, intelligent life does not require a torso. I would think the sort of intelligence we have, tool makers, would require a way to manipulate the environment, limbs make sense in an earth based environment, but clearly they are not even needed and we should not assume all intelligent creatures will be tool makers, since the most intelligent animals on Earth are predators and the only tools they use are their evolved ones, claws and fangs. Some even display coordination and tactical execution, like african wild dogs. They never use their limbs except to run. Highly intelligent animals.
The majority of creatures in mass effect were torso based, limbed creatures. I dont think mass effect is a good example. Sorry.

Re: Aliens?
The problem is that in order for intelligence to be useful they have to be able to build tools. This would require dexterous and non-dexterous limbs, dexterous to make tools, non-dextrous to move about. Now while it is possible that intelligent life would evolve in an aquatic environment, and therefore not develop a torso, on land it is a more efficient way to move.

The odds and possibilities are so big it is near impossible to assume anth thru probability, becuz the numbers become quite insignificant.
