Killing should always be a last resort, but the man was well within his rights and I don't blame him. Outnumbered against people a quarter his age who obviously intended to rob him, possibly worse. It would have been better to just pull it on them and scare them off, but the number of people who have their wits about them in that situation is low at best so it's not like you can blame him for falling back on instinct.

Laws just coming into power here in the UK, that allows you to injure/kill anyone who is robbing you or trespassing. Is that how it is in the US?

It depends on the case and the state. Some states have "Stand your ground" laws which allow you to use whatever force you feel is warranted to stop a perceived threat. The rest require you to attempt to run or call for help and ONLY resort to violence as a last resort while under attack.

But in practicality, any juri will sentence you as innocent because that motherhubber had it coming....

In practice a jury is likely to dismiss it as self-defense regardless of the state so long as the force was appropriate to the threat. So shooting someone for pushing you around, no not unless it's an elder being thrown around and there is a serious likelihood it could hurt or kill the person. But shooting a fucker who's brandishing a knife, yeah they'll find you innocent most times.
